Ban waves and the loss reserve

Platform risk cannot be wished away — it can be counted. How to put ban waves into the farm budget instead of hoping.

Cet article est affiché en anglais ; une traduction est en préparation.

What a ban wave is

A ban wave is mass, coordinated enforcement: Valve bans large groups of accounts at once, typically ones it classifies as automated. The wave of March 2026 was publicly reported at roughly 960,000 accounts in a single day, with the scale confirmed by a CS2 developer in public comments.

Waves are not announced in advance and do not come on a schedule. A farm that survived the last wave has proven nothing about the next one.

Why the risk cannot be removed

Automating accounts can conflict with the Steam Subscriber Agreement — that is the honest baseline. Any farming tool operates inside that gray zone, including ones that avoid cheat functions and never touch the game client, like SkyNet Panel's workflow.

What a responsible tool can do is reduce unnecessary risk: no cheats, no client modification, behavior that resembles ordinary play. What no tool can do is guarantee immunity. Anyone promising zero bans is selling a feeling, not a fact.

Turning risk into a number

Risk management for a farm is arithmetic. Pick a monthly loss rate — the share of accounts you expect to lose to bans and trade locks per month. Five percent can serve as an example starting assumption; your own logs are better than any default.

That rate goes straight into the economics: expected income shrinks by the same share, and the replacement cost of lost accounts becomes a standing budget line. Our profit calculator has a dedicated field for it.

Structuring the farm to survive

Economic resilience beats heroics. Do not invest more in accounts than you can afford to lose. Keep a replacement budget instead of a zero balance. Prefer stable, boring growth over doubling the farm in one step — a smaller farm that survives a bad month beats a large one that cannot.

And watch the market side too: trade locks on individual items delay cash-out even when accounts stay alive.

Reading our own numbers honestly

The September snapshot on our statistics page shows 100 accounts, zero bans, zero downtime. That is a fact about two weeks of September — not a promise about October. When a wave comes, the snapshot will show it, and the base will be recalculated.

That is the whole point of publishing a methodology: numbers you can check beat numbers you have to believe.
